The summer portion of our programming, B-SAFE helps keep low-income students learning and growing over the summer instead of experiencing “summer slide” in their skills. Cumulative summer slide and the learning gaps it produces have been implicated as major causes of school failure by ninth grade. B-SAFE also offers our teen staff a great way to spend the summer, earn income, and gain valuable work experience. Most importantly, it gives them the invaluable opportunity to be positive role models. We hire more than 100 older teens as Counselors-in-Training, many with help from the Boston Youth Fund and Chelsea Collaborative. We also hire about 20 ninth graders as Junior Counselors-in-Training (JCITs). Teens help ensure that every child is safe, run team building exercises, assist teaching specialists with academic curriculum, supervise students on field trips, serve as role models, and make sure everyone has fun.
